Save the date! On Saturday, June 2 at 11 am, San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts Art Docent Jim Kohn will present a lecture "Cult of Beauty, the Victorian Avant Garde." This exhibit, currently at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco until June 17, is the first major exhibition to explore the unconventional creativity of the British Aesthetic Movement, tracing the evolution of this movement from a small circle of progressive artists and poets, through the achievements of innovative painters and architects, to its broad impact on fashion and the middle-class home. The superb artworks on view encompass the manifold forms of Victorian material culture: the traditional high art of painting, fashionable trends in architecture and interior decoration, handmade and manufactured furnishings for the “artistic” home, art photography, and the new modes of dress.

The Main Library of Novato is known as the busiest library in the county. Its partner, the South Novato Library (SNO) is fast gaining a like reputation.

Both libraries offer a wide range of activities for their patrons. Book clubs to appeal to every taste are offered afternoons and evenings. Story-times in English and Spanish are offered at both libraries. Special programs of interest are held frequently. One of the newest services is Live Homework Help, a free on-line program to assist 4th to 12th graders with homework problems. The Reference desk can help with more information. Call 897-1142.

The Friends of the Novato Libraries provide service and support to both libraries. In the past, the Friends have been instrumental in the remodeling and refurbishing the Children's Room of the Main Library, purchased new atrium furniture, new indoor furniture for both libraries and keep an endless supply of pencils on hand for distribution.

The Friends have always focused on service to the children of Novato. Over the years, they have supported the summer reading programs, supplying prizes and materials. The newest focus is the program supporting early literacy. Called "EVERY CHILD READY TO READ", the Libraries offer parent guides to early literacy for children from birth to age 5. The Friends of the Novato Libraries Board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM. Meetings alternate between the two libraries, so call either library for the location. All are welcome to attend.
